Winghe Jodocus van (1542/44-1603)

Flemish painter. Born1542/44 in Brussels, died1603 in Frankfurt-on-Main. During his stay in Italy in the 1560s he became acquainted with the oeuvre of Anthoni Santvort, Jan Speckaert and Bartholom(us Spranger. For some time he lived in Paris. In 1568 he appeared in Brussels as the court painter of the Governor of the Netherlands Alexander Farnese. In 1584 or 1585 he moved to Frankfurt-on-Main for religious reasons, where in 1588 he obtained citizenship and was connected with the colony of Netherlandish artists there. His oeuvre comprises religious pictures, historical and mythological scenes as well as allegories, frequently duplicated in the form of prints.
